    Creation

The Super Sentai (スーパー戦隊) is the title given to the Sentai franchise, a series about different color-coded uniform teams that fight different kinds of villains, going from aliens, terrorist groups, or fantasy creatures. Each season has it's own team of rangers that follow a certain gimmick, whether it be science, animals, vehicles, dinosaurs, pirates, and even trains, but always fighting for the greater good, with the help of their own vehicles, weapons and robots.

It's considered to be Shotaro Ishinomori's most popular creation alongside Kamen Rider, which as a matter of fact, constantly does crossovers with Super Sentai, the most notable being the "Super Hero Time" block on TV Asashi, as they constantly do commercials including the current Kamen Rider and Super Sentai team.

The franchise is widely considered to be one of the "Founding Fathers" of Tokusatsu, alongside Godzilla, Ultraman, and the previously mentioned Kamen Rider.

And speaking of commercial stuff, one of the most popular things about the series is it's tons of toys that are available from them, like action figures, mechas, recreations of their different devices, T-Shirts, and many more.

And while many haven't heard about Super Sentai exactly, they most probably do know about it's American adaptation, Power Rangers, which has also received big sales and acclaim all around the world.

    Concepts

Alongside each team following a certain gimmick, that is even applied to their weapons, vehicles and mechas, another important thing to consider is that they act on a similar basis of most superhero tropes, like fighting the "villain of the week" that sometimes comes back stronger, hanging out either on their headquarters or in normal places (either a house or around the city), and dealing with their normal lives, which all of these things have been also included in their American counterpart.

Another thing that they're known for is for having transformation devices, poses and sequences, something that was popularized thanks to Kamen Rider, and later known internationally thanks to Magical Girl shows like Sailor Moon.

Alongside this, ever since 2005 the finale of each series since Dekaranger includes an extra scene where the leader of that team meets up with the leader of the upcoming team, serving as a baton pass.

Last but not least, we can take notes that for the most part, the leader of the team has always been the Red Ranger (with the only exception of sorts being Kakuranger, as the series always took note that Ninja White was the true leader of the team), this is mostly due to the popularity of the color in both Japanese culture and in the Sentai fandom.

    Other teams

    Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger
    Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger

EX 1- Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger (非公認戦隊アキバレンジャー): A rather interesting case regarding a Sentai team, as they aren't counted in the official Super Sentai numbering, as they're an official series by Toei done as a parody/tribute to Super Sentai. Their first season ran in 2012 for 13 episodes, while their second season ran in 2013 for 13 episodes. This team has a otaku/ecchi gimmick, and for OBVIOUS reasons, it hasn't been adapted into Power Rangers. The series focuses on 3 people who are part of an otaku club and live in the new "Electric-Town" of Akibahara. However, when a mysterious malevolent entity appears with plans of conquer earth, these 3 people will have to fight against them with cool gadgets created by a brilliant genius as the Akibarangers. In the end, their final goal is to become an "official" Sentai team. Their adventure continues in Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger Season Tsuu (非公認戦隊アキバレンジャーシーズン痛 -ツー-), where they fight against a villain who's a major Super Sentai fan, and has modeled himself after classic villains. Funnily enough, while not being in the official Sentai numbering, the series was recognized in Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger, albeit following the humorous style of the series by being an "unofficial" gear.

Disclaimer: The reason why the following series is the Super Sentai page, and not the Power Rangers page, is due to Toei's involvement in the series, going so far as to give them the title of their "predecessor" when dubbing it to Japan.

    Power Rangers Dino Force Brave
    Power Rangers Dino Force Brave

EX 2- Power Rangers Dino Force Brave (파워레인저 다이노포스 브레이브): Another interesting case, this series is also known in Japan under the name of Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Brave (獣電戦隊キョウリュウジャーブレイブ). The series serves as the sequel to Power Rangers Dino Force, the Korean dub of Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger. It ran in 2017 for 12 episodes, and as it's predecessor, it has a dinosaur gimmick. The series starts after the Kyoryugers destroyed the Deboth Army, thus bringing peace to Earth again. However, this peace doesn't last for long, as a huge spaceship arrives to Earth, unveiling the Neo Deboth Army, who plan to get revenger against the Zyudenryu. To stop this, Torin's spirit, alongside Luckyuro and Candelilla, wander to find the new "People of the Strong Dragons", so that they become the Brave Dino Force Rangers and fight against the Neo Deboth Army.

    Trivia

    • Until 1995, Gorenger and JAKQ weren't considered Super Sentai series, this can be seen with series like Liveman and Dairanger, who were marketed as anniversary series despite their seasons not being multiples of 5. It wasn't until Ohranger that Gorenger and JAKQ were acknowledged as Super Sentai Series.
    • Haim Saban (the creator of Power Rangers) discovered Super Sentai back when he was on a business trip to Japan, and watched some Super Sentai on his hotel room. As a matter of fact, he originally pitched Bioman to be the first localized series in the US, which failed.
    • At the peak of the original Power Rangers series popularity, Saban wanted more scenes with the original costumes; but after seeing they ran out of Zyuranger footage, Saban contacted Toei Corporation and Rainbow Productions to produce more scenes with the Zyuranger suits. To Saban's luck, they agreed, and made 25 more "episodes" of in-suit battle and mecha fighting scenes in Japan, these footage was later used for the later Mighty Morphin Power Rangers seasons, this footage is know by the fans as "Zyu2".
    • While South Korea uses the Power Rangers name, they have their own adaptation.
    • Apart from doing crossovers between their own series (through different teams) and Kamen Rider, other series they did crossovers with are Metal Hero, Kikaider, Ultraman, and even PreCure or Tsuribaka Nisshi.
    • Since 2015, Shout! Studios has released every original Sentai (since Fiveman) in USA.
    • To avoid any possible continuity errors in the multiverse, Toei changed the year where Ohranger takes place, as 1999 was later used by GoGo-V. Because of this, Ohranger currently takes place in 1995.
    • Ever since Dekaranger, every Sentai Series includes a "Hand-Off" extra scene at the final episode, where the current series Sentai leader meets up with the next series Sentai leader (Dekaranger to Magiranger, Magiranger to Boukenger, Boukenger to Gekiranger, and so on), this is done as a way to prepare the viewers for the next series.
    • The main reason why in almost every Sentai the Red Ranger serves as the leader (with some exceptions of sorts, the most notable being the latter half of JAKQ, or the entirety of Kakuranger, Timeranger or Zenkaiger) is because the Red Ranger is normally the most popular between the female fans of Super Sentai, thus making it the only Ranger color to be in every Sentai series alongside Blue.
