Recommended Modern Age Comics

From the mid 1980s to the present, these are some of the comics I recommend.

List items

  • Rob Rodi and Esad Ribic retell the age old story of the conflict between Thor and Loki from Loki's point of view. Beautifully written and illustrated.

  • The first of Matt Fractions 'Ancient Asgard' trilogy ties Marvel's Thor comics more closely to Norse mythology.

  • Second in Matt Fraction's 'Ancient Asgard' trilogy.

  • Third in Matt Fraction's 'Ancient Asgard' trilogy

  • Thor has assumed the Asgardian throne, but Asgard's empire is crumbling, and Asgard itself is plagued by eternal winter. Can Ragnarok be far off?

Intentional or not, there are numerous parallels between the Asgard of this series and the U.S.A. in the years following 9/11.

  • Eric Shanower's epic retelling of the Trojan War is one of the great achievements in the comic book medium.

  • A great Thor one shot. Thor and a group of vikings do battle with Hela and her demon horde.

  • The best comic series of the 1990s - perhaps ever.

  • The current ongoing Hex title starts with a Victorian Western Murder Mystery!

  • Superman for All Seasons is the prequel to Superman's career. A touching coming-of-age story about Clark Kent's struggles to find his place in the world.

  • In 1987, Frank Miller rebooted Batman as the dark shadowy crime fighter we know him as today.

Batman #404-#407 by Frank Miller tells the story of Batman's first year as a crime fighter. It is an outstanding piece of work.

  • Catwoman's origin.

  • John Byrne's 6 issue min-series, "The Man of Steel", reboots Superman for the modern era, giving an updated account of his origin, first meeting with characters like Lois Lane and Batman, and first conflict with Lex Luthor.

  • A look back at the early days following Superman's first appearance in Metropolis, and how the police and crime syndicates reacted.

  • A stylized adventure set 2 months after Superman first appears.

  • Superman must decide how he will handle the very real potential of a nuclear war.

  • Think you know Aquaman? Guess again.

  • Swamp Thing integrates words and art into a narrative that so smooth it almost feels like you're watching a movie.

  • You want action? The Huntress delivers.

  • The romance of Spider-Man and Mary Jane from Mary Jane's perspective.

  • A wonderful homage to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby!

  • This is the BEST superhero comic series of all time!

  • A great Elseworlds (imaginary) story of the future of the D.C. Universe.

  • How do you police a city where everyone has super powers? TOP 10 is a superhero police procedural comic that asks that question. Join rookie cop Toy Box as she's partnered with veteran Smax on her first day on the streets of Neopolis! Highly Recommended!

  • Clark Kent's first day on the job. Worth reading even if we've seen it before.

  • The history of the Kent family in Civil War era Kansas.

  • Spider-Man in the immediate aftermath of 9/11
