Mr. Mobius

Origin

Mr. Mobius was a senior executive of middle management in the Time Variance Authority, genetically engineered like many other executives and agents of the Authority. He rose through the ranks due to his perseverance and love of details. His job is to keep track of the various timelines, determining their fate, if needed. Mobius is loosely based on Mark Gruenwald.

Creation

Mobius M. Mobius was created by Walter Simonson and and first appeared in Fantastic Four issue 353 (1991). A clone of him appeared in issue 352, bearing his likeness, but that was not the real Mobius.

Major Story Arcs

Meeting the FF

Mobius was first seen when the Fantastic Four (Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Ms. Marvel/Sharon Ventura, Thing) were arrested for repeatedly interfering with the timelines through time-travel. Doctor Doom was supposed to be arrested with them, but managed to fake his death and hide. Mr. Fantastic tried to defend his team, pointing out that their actions were similar to those of the Avengers and the X-Men, who had not been arrested. This only led to Mobius looking into these files also, forming a plan to discontinue their timeline.

Before Mobius was able to pass any judgment, Sharon started flirting with him. Trying to impress her, Mobius led the Fantastic Four on a tour of their offices. This gave them the time and information needed to escape. Thanks to some sabotage, their timeline vanished from the Authority's records, making it temporarily undetectable. Mobius did relocate it later, but chose to let it be.

Mobius M. Mobius has the likeness of Mark Gruenwald, longtime Marvel writer and Editor whom died of a heartattack in 1996.

• Mobius M. Mobius appears as one of the main characters in the 2021 Disney+ series Loki, portrayed by Owen Wilson. As in the comics, he is a high ranking member of the Time Variance Authority, as well as a comrade and personal friend of Ravonna Renslayer. When Loki is arrested and brought into the TVA after escaping from the events of The Avengers in 2012, Mobius is placed in charge of processing the Norse god. Mobius soon sees an opportunity to convince Loki to help track down a rogue Loki Variant that has been trapping and killing TVA agents for years, and the two strike up an uneasy alliance. Though initially believing he is helping preserve the Sacred Timeline at the behest of the Time-Keepers, Mobius is gradually convinced by Loki that something more sinister may be going on behind the scenes, and that the TVA's origins and goal may not be what he was led to believe.
