God of War 2018 or God of War: Ragnarok?
2018 might be more tightly packed experience but Ragnarok makes it seem like a short trip to scatter a little bit of ashes.
Ragnarok for sure, obviously there things that you can nitpick on either game but overall I felt the gameplay was much much better, characters were great and it’s the perfect bridge point to take us into the new chapter of the GoW franchise :
“Kratos the Rebuilder”
2018 stomps. The first 2/3 or so of ragnarok was great but it completely falls apart that. The fight with odin was a huge disappointment and the twist with tyr made me just not care anymore. Exploring in ragnarok isn't as fun either. It just feels tedious and unrewarding. Especially in vanaheimr
Ragnarok for me. Thought it held up well for the entirety of the game and most of the realms were more fun to explore IMO.

I'm more emotionally attached to 2018, I think. That game really made an impression on me, and its story felt more charming and grounded in a way.
I can acknowledge that Ragnarok improved things in many aspects, and I prefer it in some, but I think 2018 is a tighter experience. Some of my gripes with Ragnarok lower it a lot, unfortunately.
2018 had the better plot and set pieces but I loved how character driven Ragnarok was. Brom's funeral music should've got an award 😭
Ragnarok and GoW 4 are both masterpieces imo, but I lean towards Ragnarok. The story and Kratos' character arc are equally strong in both, with Ragnarok benefiting from the Valhalla DLC. Supporting characters are more fleshed out in Ragnarok. Gameplay and graphics are comparable, with a slight edge to Ragnarok. Ragnarok's larger scale and improved boss battles, especially the first Thor fight which is my favorite boss in any video game, also make it stand out. Overall, both are some of my favorite games ever, but Ragnarok has more to praise.
Ragnarok
2018 was better for me though both are great. Felt more open world whereas Ragnarok is on rails for most of the game and the side content is lopsided (barebones for most, infinite amount of stuff on Vanaheim). The story wasn't as strong either.
I liked god of war 4 better
Ragnarok was rushed having to conclude freya's revenge plot line aswell as juggling multiple villians at once all while trying to conclude the story and it failed at that needing additional dlc to really flesh things out more
Alot of stuff was missed, athena's involvement in the story of ragnarok was non existenr despite being set up as a ongoing threat in 4.
Just not enough time was given to the devs to conclude on everything hinted at in 4.
